If I cast Arcbond on my opponent's turn, and deal lethal damage to every player, who wins?

Asked by CamraMaan 2 years ago

It wouldn't be hard to answer if it was on my turn, but I'm less clear about this happening on an opponent's turn. The scenario is my opponent is attacking with a 64/64 creature (without trample), it is blocked by a 3/3 creature, and I cast Arcbond targeting the blocking creature. Damage is dealt, everyone takes 64 damage, being lethal for everyone at the table. Do I win because I cast Arcbond and hold priority? Or does the priority reset to the person whose turn it is, and they win...? Thanks in advance! :)

The game ends in a draw because all players lose at the same time. Dying because a player is at zero or less life is a state-based action. Here are some of the rules that explain SBAs, that zero life is an SBA, and what happens when all remaining players lose at the same time.

704.1. State-based actions are game actions that happen automatically whenever certain conditions (listed below) are met. State-based actions don’t use the stack.

704.2. State-based actions are checked throughout the game and are not controlled by any player.

704.5. The state-based actions are as follows: 704.5a If a player has 0 or less life, that player loses the game.

104.4a If all the players remaining in a game lose simultaneously, the game is a draw.

Ha! Thank you!! My group has been playing under the assumption that the player who caused everyone to die is the default winner, I believe with the argument that they are the last one to die. So this is good to know! Much appreciated! :)
