If I cast a card from my graveyard can someone respond to it by exiling my graveyard?

Asked by Nosiris 4 years ago

To be more specific, I was trying to cast Gravecrawler the other day from the graveyard. I had a zombie on the field so I payed 1 black Mana and I said "I'm going to cast Gravecrawler." and the person playing with me said "in response I will use Tormod's Crypt to exile your graveyard"

We got into a minor argument about it because it was my understanding that if I had cast Gravecrawler it was on the stack so exiling my graveyard with Tormod's Crypt would not stop it from resolving.

I don't understand how these cards interact.

You were right. Once you announce a spell to start the casting process, the first chance anyone gets priority to make a response is after you've moved it to the stack, made all the necessary decisions (modes, targets, etc.), and paid all the costs.

These are the first and last steps in the sequence of rules describing the process of casting a spell:

601.2a To propose the casting of a spell, a player first moves that card (or that copy of a card) from where it is to the stack. It becomes the topmost object on the stack. It has all the characteristics of the card (or the copy of a card) associated with it, and that player becomes its controller. The spell remains on the stack until it’s countered, it resolves, or an effect moves it elsewhere.

601.2i Once the steps described in 601.2a–h are completed, effects that modify the characteristics of the spell as it’s cast are applied, then the spell becomes cast. Any abilities that trigger when a spell is cast or put onto the stack trigger at this time. If the spell’s controller had priority before casting it, they get priority.

Nosiris: A correct answer to your question has been up for a while. I marked it as the "Accepted answer" so that this topic can move out of the list of unanswered questions. Please remember to take care of this yourself in the future.

I usually avoid marking my own response when I do this, but in this case it was the only option.

what if a player cast a card such as resurrection to put a creature into play can an Player use tormods crypt in response to stop the player from targeting the creature in the 1st place? I’m new and tryna understand the “stack” a lil better.

NerkyPipples: Yes, that works. What you're doing is making the target of the spell go away before the spell can start resolving. If all of a spell's targets are missing or illegal when it's time for it to start resolving, the spell will just be put into the graveyard without resolving. None of its effects will happen.

If you have a question, it's much more effective to post a new topic rather than respond to an old one. With the way this area of the website works, the only people who will be aware of a response to an old topic are whoever posted in that old topic. Since it looks like the person who asked the original question in this thread hasn't had any more activity on the site since then, that means I'm probably the only person here who knew that you responded with another question.
