If a planeswalker turned into creature dies/exiles does it come back?

Asked by -Xiphos- 8 years ago

my friend says that if his Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker dies or gets exiled as a creature that it would come back at the end of his turn and I'm pretty sure that's wrong. Obviously Murder wouldn't kill him, but a Dismember would. The same scenario pretty much goes for any other planeswalkers that turn into creatures.

I also know that if a land/enchantment/artifact were to become a permanent they would die, but he believes that his +1 effect would bring him back anyways.

"Until end of turn" merely defines the duration of the effect that's changing Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker's characteristics. It doesn't at all mean that Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker will somehow return to the battlefield if killed.

The short answer is your friend is wrong and you are right.

The "until end of turn" bit of Sarkhan's ability only indicates the effects duration. It will never cause any actions on it's own other than the effect wearing off.

"I also know that if a land/enchantment/artifact were to become a permanent" ... You meant creature, right?

Your friend is wrong. If a planeswalker becomes a creature then it will follow all the normal rules for creatures. There's no special rule for planeswalkers that will cause the game to treat them differently if they go to the graveyard or exile.

As the other responders have pointed out, "until end of turn" only gives the duration for the type-changing effect. It doesn't mean anything with respect to returning Sarkhan to the battlefield.

Yes I meant creature, just a typo.
