If a creature with double strike attacks and kills a defender with the first strike damage phase. is the normal phase damage redirected at the player or does it have no effect?

Example:2/2 with double strike attacks and is blooked by a 1/1.will the normal attacking phase deal damage to the defending player?

It's worth noting that Trample will allow this. If a 2/2 Double Strike Trample is blocked by a 1/1, it will deal 1 damage to the blocking creature and 1 damage to the defending player during the first strike damage step, and then be able to assign its full 2 damage to the defending player during the normal damage step.

chosenone124 That's fair. I see Trample printed without reminder text often enough though that it's easy for people to forget how it interacts with certain other effects. It can be surprisingly intricate for such a simple premise.

It will not. Combat damage cannot be assigned to players if the attacker is blocked, unless a card effect allows it.
