If a card mentions one color in a cards color types does it apply to it?

Asked by Nuubi 5 years ago

The interaction in question is Murkfiend Liege and Roon of the Hidden Realm . The question is, does murkfiend’s untap ability apply to Roon even though it only mentions two of the colors in Roon’s color scheme and not all three?

On a side note would this apply to spells with protection from one color when the card in question is multicolored? Like for instance I have protection from red and a green and red creature attacks me. Would I still have protection from it?

Yes, Murkfiend Liege 's abilities apply to Roon despite not mentioning all of Roon's colors. Roon is green, and Roon is blue, so Roon qualifies for the untap ability and both of the +1/+1 abilities (since they are separate, you apply each separately, so creatures that are both blue and green receive both for a total of +2/+2).

The same goes for protection. If an ability says "protection from red," it doesn't matter that the creature is also green. Nikya of the Old Ways is red because it has red in its casting cost, and no color-defining text to change that. Vestige of Emrakul , on the other hand, is colorless because Devoid says so, so it is not red.

In short, answer the following questions:

Is Roon blue? Is Roon green?

Is Nikya red? Is Vestige red?

It's as simple as that. Roon is blue, green, and white. So something that applies to a blue creature will apply to him, even if that effect doesn't apply to a white creature normally. It ignores Roon's other colors because it doesn't care.

Vestige is specifically colorless because of the Devoid rules text, which supersedes the symbols in its casting cost, so effects that look for red objects ignore it, and effects that look for colorless care about it.

I figured, just wanted some clarification. It’s hard to find things like this in the comprehensive rules. Appreciate your time as always!
