I play Spirit Link on opponent's creature... what happens?

Asked by gabethatguy 8 years ago

If I play Spirit Link on my opponent's Siege Rhino, would my opponent gain life if Siege Rhino deals damage, or would I?

You would. Spirit Link says "You gain that much life", where "you" means the controller of the aura, not the controller of the enchanted permanent. So whenever Rhino engages in combat, it will deal 4 damage and you will gain 4 life.

It's a fairly circuitous way to remove a creature but hey, it works :)

Just a note: Spirit Link doesn't limit itself to combat damage and would apply if the creature does damage for any other reason as well

also, just to note, the trigger has to resolve for you to gain the life, so if you rely on spirit link to heal you after taking lethal damage, you go to 0 life before the trigger goes off and lose.
