Hydra as tokens

Asked by Cheesysurvivor5 2 years ago

I created a WRG token deck and I have 3 Hydras in it. I've done a few playtesting with it and I'm not sure how some cards work. Like with Mirror March where I create a token if I win the coin toss, and I create 3 Hydras. Do they gain the same power and toughness as the original or no?

No.

cost Hydras (let's say Mistcutter Hydra so we have an example card) generally enter the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters defined by paid for the spell they were cast as. A token copy of a Hydra creature in play, regardless of when it's created, will have X be 0 because that's only a property of the spell, not the card or the creature. To get a copy of a Hydra that comes in with counters, you need something like Double Major (which might be the only one, actually) that copies it while it's still a spell on the stack.

Generally, a token copy of an Hydra will just enter as a 0/0 and die. Using a spell or Aura to boost its toughness is too slow, but cards like Glorious Anthem can keep it alive as a 1/1 or so.

To clarify, in a cost is 0 anywhere but the stack. Mistcutter Hydra has a mana value of 1 when it's in play, in your hand, graveyard, library, etc. The only time it's anything else is when it's being cast, when you pick a value for and pay it. On the stack, it has a mana value of X + 1, and when the spell resolves it puts Mistcutter Hydra into play (with a mana value of 1 again) and the ability looks back to what was on the stack to determine how many counters it enters with.

Lithoform engine would be another option to copy a permanent spell on the stack.
