Hunger of the Howlpack and Shambling Goblin

Asked by dvdn1997 3 years ago

Alright, person 1 has a 1/1 Creature on the board and Hunger of the Howlpack in her hand.

Person 2 has a Shambling Goblin and a Carrion Feeder on the battlefield.

If person 2 sacrifices Shambling Goblin to Carrion Feeder, and target the 1/1, can Person 1 then play Hunger of the Howlpack for its Morbid effect on the 1/1, or does it then only receive a single +1/+1 counter?

The 1/1 creature would get 3 +1/+1 counters. Shambling Goblin must die to trigger. In response to that trigger, Player 1 can cast Hunger of the Howlpack. Since a creature died (i.e. the Goblin), you get the morbid effect (morbid just cares that any creature died).

Not only must Shambling Goblin die in order for its trigger to go on the stack, but it died in the process of activating the Carrion Feeder's ability (once that ability is declared, nothing else happens until it's put on the stack and its costs paid, which in this case means sacrificing the Goblin). This means Morbid is online for the purposes of casting Hunger of the Howlpack.
