How Many Times Will a Spell Be Copied?

Asked by DemonDragonJ 3 years ago

If a player controls Riku of Two Reflections , Ral, Storm Conduit , and Twinning Staff , casts an instant or sorcery spell, and then copies that spell three times, once with Riku, once with Ral, and once with the staff, how many additional copies will the staff generate?

Three additional times. Each different effect is a separate occurrence of copying "a spell one or more times". The "one or more" is there to stop it from being broken with the storm mechanic and other single effects that copy multiple times.

Gidgetimer, thank you, very much, and I am very pleased to hear that.

What if a player casts Fury Storm and has alaready cast their general at least once? How many additional copies will the staff produce, then?

Let's give a concrete number here, and say you've cast your commander twice this game. When you cast Fury Storm , its triggered ability will copy it twice. Because of Twinning Staff , that will become three times, so when the trigger resolves it will put three additional copies of Fury Storm on the stack (four total). When each Fury Storm resolves, it will make a copy (two copies because of Twinning Staff) of the spell it's targeting. If all the Fury Storms targeted the same instant or sorcery, you'll ultimately end up resolving nine copies of it (1 original, plus 2 copies from each of the 4 Fury Storms).

One side note here is the order you'll resolve things in. Because new spells are put on top of the stack, you'll resolve each pair of copies before the rest of the Fury Storms, so the resolution will look like this (copies of a spell are numbered by the order they were placed on the stack):

  • Fury Storm's ability resolves and puts three copies of itself on the stack
  • Fury Storm (3) resolves, making two copies
  • Copy (2) resolves
  • Copy (1) resolves
  • Fury Storm (2) resolves
  • Copy (4) resolves
  • Copy (3) resolves
  • Fury Storm (1) resolves
  • Copy (6) resolves
  • Copy (5) resolves
  • Fury Storm (original) resolves
  • Copy (8) resolves
  • Copy (7) resolves
  • Original spell resolves

Thank you, very much, Polaris; that is very good to know, as I am planning to make a deck that focuses heavily on instants and sorceries.
