How many times can I use Kurkesh's ability?

Asked by greensheepman7 9 years ago

I would like to utilize a Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient that I got. But I'm unclear on the capability of his ability. Can I use his ability as many times as I can in one turn? Or is it limited to once.

Unless otherwise stated, you can "use" an ability any number of times.

Do note that this particular ability is a triggered ability, so it only triggers when the specified event occurs. Also, you may only pay the optional payment once per trigger.

Because it's a triggered ability (starts with "when / whenever / at"), you're able to use it as many times as you're able to make it trigger (and pay the R). Like it says, it triggers whenever you activate an ability of an artifact. Note that only activated abilities (written as "Cost : Effect") can be "activated".

Examples:

  • Tormod's Crypt has an activated ability, so Kurkesh can copy it.
  • The first ability of The Chain Veil is a triggered ability, so Kurkesh won't interact with that one, but the second ability is an activated ability, so you can use him to copy it.
  • Obelisk of Urd only has static abilities, so Kurkesh won't interact with them.

Sorry, I worded this incorrectly. What I meant to ask is can I use his ability multiple times on a single activated ability.

Like, can I copy a single activated ability as many times as my mana pool will allow.

Just once.
It says "whenever ... you may pay (R)." This means that for each ability, you may pay once. It is a triggered ability, and it only triggers once per each artifact ability activation.
If it read "(R): Copy target activated ability," then you could activate it multiple times.

Basically, what Epochalyptik and Rhadamanthus said.
