How many Thermo-Alchemist triggers would I get?

Asked by ThoughtShift 7 years ago

Ok, so say I have a Thermo-Alchemist on the field and 3 Mountains. I tap Thermo-Alchemist to deal 1 damage. I then tap 2 lands and activate Tormenting Voice discarding a Fiery Temper and casting it with my 3rd land. My question is, during the casting of Tormenting Voice could I untap the Thermo-Alchemist and tap to do 1 damage and then untap it once again upon casting the Fiery Temper for it's madness cost? Would I be able to get 3 Thermo-Alchemist triggers or 2? And if 3 how would I technically need to stack my triggers? I hope I was clear with my question, thanks.

First and foremost, you don't activate Tormenting Voice, you cast it.

Secondly, You will get two triggers of Thermo-Alchemist's untap ability. Here's what it'll look like, assuming no one responds to anything:

  • Announce Tormenting Voice, discarding a Fiery Temper (as the additional cost) into exile. Madness then triggers and waits to go on the stack until you're finished performing the casting process for Tormenting Voice.

  • Once cast, Thermo-Alchemist's untap ability triggers and goes on the stack with the Madness trigger. It's not important in what order they go on the stack. For this scenario, the Madness trigger will resolve first.

  • Madness resolves, allowing you to cast Fiery Temper from exile. This triggers Thermo-Alchemist's untap ability, having it go on the stack on top of Fiery Temper.

  • The untap trigger resolves, untapping Thermo-Alchemist. Then Fiery Temper resolves, dealing something 3 damage.

  • The next object to resolve now is the second trigger of Thermo-Alchemist's untap ability. With that still on the stack, active his ability to deal each opponent 1 damage. Then let the trigger resolve, untapped him.

  • Lastly, Tormenting Voice resolves, drawing you two cards. You could then tap Thermo-Alchemist to deal each opponent another 1 damage if you so choose.
