How does Surge of Righteousness interact with Willbreaker?

Say I have Willbreaker on the field and my opponent attacks. I cast Surge of Righteousness in response. I know I would gain control of his creature (assuming nothing else happens) and it would be removed from combat. Would I still gain the 2 life or does SoR fizzle without a legal target?

Gatherer Ruling: "2/25/2015 However, if the creature becomes an illegal target before Surge of Righteousness resolves, it will be countered and none of its effects will happen. You wont gain life."
