How does Sarulf, Realm Eater resolve with the Initiative

Asked by Wizqard 1 year ago

My friend has Sarulf, Realm Eater with 6 counter on it. He also hase the Initiative at level 1. At the beginning of the upkeep, how do they resolve? I believed APNAP order. but Sarulf, Realm Eater hase a rulling : You choose whether to remove +1/+1 counters as the last ability is resolving. If you do, the appropriate permanents are then exiled. No one can respond to your choice or take actions during this process. How would this work with the Initiative.

It's not entirely clear from your question, but I think you're saying the player is currently in the "Secret Entrance" room of the Undercity and wants to move to the "Forge" room after The Initiative makes them venture. Let me know if I got that wrong.

The player can choose what order things happen. Since the triggers that are trying to go onto the stack at the same time ("at the beginning of your upkeep") are controlled by the same player, that player can decide what order to put them onto the stack.

  • If Sarulf's trigger is put onto the stack first and The Initiative's trigger is put on top of it, The Initiative will resolve first and make the player venture into the Undercity. If they go to the Forge room, that will trigger and put two +1/+1 counters somewhere. Then Sarulf's trigger will finally resolve
  • If The Initiative's trigger is put onto the stack first and Sarulf's trigger is put on top of it, Sarulf will resolve first. Then The Initiative's trigger resolves and so on and so forth

In case this is also part of the question: Sarulf's ability only exiles objects on the battlefield, and neither The Initiative nor the Undercity are on the battlefield. They won't be affected by Sarulf's ability resolving.
