How does Saffi Eriksdotter work with cards that exile upon dying do to their own triggered ability?

Asked by MagicalHacker 9 years ago

Let's say I have a Saffi Eriksdotter , a Phyrexian Altar , and a Moldgraf Monstrosity . First, I sacrifice Saffi Eriksdotter for her own activated ability choosing Moldgraf Monstrosity as the target. For this example, let's say that my Saffi is the only creature in the graveyard now. Now, I sacrifice the Monstrosity to the Altar. Both the triggered abilities trigger, so I put them on the stack however I want, right? So I put it so that the Saffi trigger resolves before the Monstrosity trigger does. This brings Monstrosity back first, then his triggered ability resolves. Since I would imagine that this ability can only exile him from the graveyard (because now he is a new object), do I still get to return Saffi without exiling him? This would be an infinite combo to make colored mana...

Thanks!

Yes, this can work the way you want. As long as you stack the triggers correctly and there are no other creatures in your graveyard, this can be an infinite combo.

(Mistmoon Griffin would also have the same combo, but it may be easier to understand.)

The important thing here is that Moldgraf Monstrosity doesn't say something like "if you do", making the rest of the ability conditional on exile. As such, the ability doesn't care if the Monstrosity doesn't actually get exiled from the graveyard (the ability loses track of it when Saffi makes it change zones), and will do as much as it can as it resolves.
