How does Resolute Archangels ability work?

Asked by bennybubbles 9 years ago

It says when it enters the battlefield, your life total becomes your starting life total, but does this count as gaining life? eg. If I had 5 life and I had a creature with Sunbond , would it get the +1/+1 counters when my life became 20?

Any life gaining is just adding to your life total, no matter how it is described. It will work as you think it does for the purposes of Sunbond .

For example, if you play Beacon of Immortality to double your life total you will "gain life equal to your current life total", but that is a lot less impressive than "double your life total", though it is the same thing.

Boza is correct. Here's the relevant rule if you need to point it to someone:

118.5 If an effect sets a players life total to a specific number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up with the new total.

Also, from Gatherer:

If your life total is less than your starting life total, you actually gain the appropriate amount of life. Other effects that interact with life gain will interact with Resolute Archangels ability accordingly.
