How does Hofri Work with Steal Effects?

Asked by Sultai_Sir 3 years ago

Hofri Ghostforge says that "Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, exile it. If you do, create a token that's a copy of that creature..." so if I steal a creature with something like Act of Treason , do I create the token copy of that creature? And if I do, does the stolen creature go into my graveyard? Thanks!

Since you were the controler, and that's what the card is instructing, you will get the token. However, cards can only be in their OWNER's hand, graveyard, exile, library, sideboard, well, all zones except the battlefield.

Since 'dies' is lingo for

  • 700.4. The term dies means “is put into a graveyard from the battlefield.

it suffices that they try and hit your opponent's GY, then go to their exile, nd their controler (you) gets the token

Hofri Ghostforge will let you create the copy, since it says "When another nontoken creature you control dies, exile it". You control it. It died. Check.

Now, when the creature dies, it goes to its owners graveyard because of this ruling:

400.3. If an object would go to any library, graveyard, or hand other than its owner's, it goes to its owner's corresponding zone.

So it won't go to your graveyard and create weird outcomes :)

That isn't quite right, sergiodelrio

Exile functions like the battlefield, in that it is a shared zone by all players. This is why you can exile an opponent's cards, and later cast those cards from exile (as an example).
