How do multiple end of turn triggers work?

Asked by Chomp16 3 years ago

Specifically, if I have an [Oath of Liliana] and [Aminatou, the Fateshifter], then I blink them with [Yorion, Sky Nomad], will I get the 2/2 zombie token from the Oath? Additionally, could I blink the Oath of Liliana and the Aminatou and still get the 2/2 zombie token?

If you have multiple triggers trying to go onto the stack at the same time, you put them onto the stack in the order of your choice. This, however, is not what is happening here. In order for an ability that triggers "at the beginning of [some step or phase]" to trigger, it needs to exist as that step/phase begins.

Yorion creates a delay trigger and will trigger at the beginning of your end step. By this point, any "at the beginning of end step" trigger will have already triggered. The Oath of Liliana that will enter as the Yorion trigger resolves will not trigger since your end step has already started.

Hope this helps!!

Additionally, in case you were thinking of just blinking Aminatou, the Fateshifter to fulfill the "planeswalker entered the battleflied under your control this turn" clause, that won't work. The trigger to return the planeswalker has the same timing as Oath of Liliana, but the Oath has an "intervening if" clause. What this means is when the End Step rolls around, you'll check if the if condition is true before deciding if it triggers. As you're checking this when your putting Yorion, Sky Nomad's ability on the stack, the answer's going to be no so you won't get to put Oath of Liliana's ability on the stack.

For intervening if clauses, the condition needs to be true both when it triggers so that it actually triggers, and when it resolves. That's not super important in this case as if Oath of Liliana's if condition is met for it to trigger, it's not going to stop being true when it tries to resolve, but it's something to be aware of for other abilities.
