Hero's Blade and Prime Speaker Zegana's card draw ability

Asked by asasinater13 8 years ago

So I think this is straight forward enough. If I have a Hero's Blade in play, and I cast Prime Speaker Zegana Does the blade equip in time for me to benefit from its power boost to draw cards? So with Hero's Blade and 6 lands, if I cast zegana would I draw 4 cards or 1?

To go further with it, let's say I already have Hero's Blade on a creature, let's just say a 1/1 token to make life simple. Can I stack her abilities so that she gets 4 +1/+1 counters from her first ability, then equip hero's blade, then draw 7 cards?

correcting myself, situation two would give 8 cards if it works how I want it to work.

You'll get the extra cards, but you'll simply need to stack the triggers correct. Whenever you have multiple triggers trying to enter the stack at the same time you get to decide what order you want them to be placed. The other fact to consider is that in most situations triggers check on resolution.

Situation A - Prime Speaker Zegana enters the battlefield with 0 counter and then both her second ability and Hero's Blade trigger. If you put her ability on first and then Hero's Blade on top of that so it resolves first.

Situation B - Still works the way you want it to. Prime Speaker Zegana gets her counters as she enters the battlefield, not as a triggered ability after she hits the field. So that ability sees the 1/1 with Hero's Blade and then you can resolve the stack as before to get the desired effect once she hits the field.

Note that even if it was a trigger, you could still stack them in order to resolve counters, move sword, draw cards in the order you want.

When abilities all activate at the same time you get to pick the order in which they occur. So for the first scenario you would say first Hero's Blade equips to Prime Speaker Zegana, then you get +1/+1 counters (which is 0 because you have no other creatures), and then you draw cards equal to Zegana's power (In this case 4). For the second scenario, you would say that first Prime Speaker Zegana gains counters equal to the greatest power you control (In this case 4), then the Hero's Blade equips to Zegana, and then you draw cards equal to Zegana's power (In this case 8).

Thanks for the responses guys.

Just to clarify, zegana's first ability isn't a triggered I think you're saying Slycne, it's more like how a Clone works... is there any name for that type of ability?

Zegana's first ability is a type of replacement effect that modifies how she enters the battlefield. You can tell a replacement effect by a few key words and phrases that will show up in the text: "as", "with", "instead", "prevent", "enters the battlefield tapped", and a couple other rarer ones I can't remember right now.
