Heart-piercer manticore + phyrexian devourer

Phyrexian Devourer and Fling can do an arbitrarily large amount of damage because fling is an instant.
Am I correct in thinking that Phyrexian Devourer and Heart-Piercer Manticore does not work to deal more than 7 damage because you have to respond to the ETB triggered ability?

You are correct - you can play Manticore and put its ability on the stack and respond to it with a lot of activations of Devourer. However, once Devourer reaches 7 power, his self-sacrifice ability will trigger and it will resolve before the Manticore ability which is on the bottom of stack.
