Fuse cards and responses

Asked by Nightstlkr 9 years ago

Had a question come up with Young Pyromancer and fuse cards, in this case Turn / Burn as well as how it gets countered. When casting both halves, I always thought it was 1 spell with a 5CMC and a multicolored spell, generating 1 token. The people at the shop said it is 2 seperate spells, generating 2 tokens and 2 spells to be countered to get rid of the effect. Which of the two was it?

From gatherer: (closest thing i could Find) When resolving a fused split spell with multiple targets, treat it as you would any spell with multiple targets. If all targets are illegal when the spell tries to resolve, the spell is countered and none of its effects happen. If at least one target is still legal at that time, the spell resolves, but an illegal target can't perform any actions or have any actions performed on it.

A fused spell is one spell which resolves left to right. The fused spell can be countered entirely by one counterspell (in fact, if fused, you don't have the option to only counter one or the other half) and will only count as one spell cast for Young Pyromancer giving you only one token.

On the stack it has one mana cost and one set of characteristics: Either one half or the other if not fused (The other side is treated as though it doesn't exist if so) or the two halves together.

You're correct. A fuse card is only ever one card and only ever one spell. It has two sets of characteristics in all zones except the stack. While on the stack, it has the characteristics of whichever half was cast. If the spell was fused, the spell has the combined characteristics of both halves.

As one spell, it generates one trigger for Young Pyromancer , and needs to be countered one time.

A small correction: A fused split spell does still have two sets of characteristics, though only one converted mana cost. It is still for sure only one spell even if fused, and can be countered by one counterspell, and generate only 1 token.
