Fog question

Asked by AjMcGamer 3 years ago

Just looking for confirmation that a creature with protection from green gets damage through even if Fog is cast. Thanks.

Fog has nothing direct to do with the creatures and does not target them. So protection from green provides no benefit where Fog is concerned.

If Fog is cast and resolves, 0 damage gets through from any creatures as the combat steps resolve.

There are no exceptions or exclusions from Fog 's effect. The card just says prevent all combat damage that would be dealt.

Since Fog says "prevent" on it, this operates like a replacement effect which replaces the damage part of all of the combat damage the turn it is cast with "nothing".

In the future, the "Rules Q&A" at the top of the page is a great place for such questions. Thanks!

This is where I am confused though because the rulings for protection state that a card with protection from a certain colour cannot be affected by magic of that colour, so regardless of targetability my understanding is that the pro green creature just ignores the fog completely.

For protection remember D.E.B.T.

Creatures with protection can't be Damaged can't be Enchanted can't be Blocked and they can't be Targeted

As mentioned above, there is a Rules Q&A section for questions regarding cards, rules, or card interactions. I have move the thread to Rules Q&A.

shadow63's answer above should help clarify things. Protection is a bit of a confusing ability since the word Wizards chose to use implies much more than the ability actually does. D.E.B.T. is a great little acronym that is well worth committing to memory.

One slight addition, the E in debt stands for Equipped/Fortified, in addition to Enchanted.

I think it's also worth mentioning that cards like Everlasting Torment and Leyline of Punishment render Fog -effects completely null & void, as well as allowing damage to occur to permanents and/or players with "Protection from X"..

Targeting does matter in this case.

If Fog actually targeted your creature then it's protection would matter. And nothing would happen to it. But it does not do anything directly to your creature. It only replaces any combat damage during the turn with nothing.

For example, if the text on the Fog spell was written this way, "Prevent all combat damage this turn that would be dealt by any number of target creatures", then your creature's protection from green would stop the spell from affecting it because of D.E.B.T.. And your combat damage would get applied to your creature's target.
