Fleecemane Lion against Devour Flesh with a dash of Selesnya Charm

Asked by theDers 9 years ago

If i have a Fleecemane Lion monstrous on the board and an opponent casts Devour Flesh can i cast Selesnya Charm for the 2/2 vigilant solider option to avoid sacrificing my Fleecemane Lion and sac the 2/2 solider instead?

Yes, Selesnya Charm will resolve before Devour Flesh does, and Devour Flesh has no way of specifying which creature you will sacrifice before it resolves, as the choice isn't made until then. As you will have two creatures when it attempts to resolve, you are free to choose either one.

The counter-example would be if Fleecemane Lion were somehow targetted by removal such as Swords to Plowshares (maybe they have Glaring Spotlight ?). The target is already locked in, in that case.

Yes, you can cast it in resp once, the charm resolves first, then th devour flesh resolves, forcing you to choose a creature to sac.

Yes, that would work fine. It should go as follows:

Your opponent casts Devour Flesh

In response, you cast Selesnya Charm putting out the 2/2.

Selsnya resolves first, being the top most spell on the stack, so by the time Devour Flesh resolves, you have the 2/2 knight and the Fleecemane Lion to choose from, when sacrificing a creature.
