First Strike and Fatal Blow

Asked by darkmatter32x 8 years ago

Say Black Knight has dealt damage to a creature and you cast Fatal Blow bore the opposing creature's damage resolve.

Is this a legal action?

Yes, if the other creature doesn't have first strike or double strike. It is because he has first strike that it works. You'd do this at the end of the first damage step, when you receive priority. The second damage step will still occur, but Black Knight won't take damage (assuming that it was the only creature in combat with him).

Just like to point out that damage does not resolve anymore. It is just dealt during it's appropriate time. But yes, you can cast it after first strike damage is done, but before regular damage is dealt.

Yes, because for every damage effect to resolve, it goes on the stack, normally all damage at once, but because it's first strike it resolves first, to when normal strike damage is put on the stack, the creature is now damaged, and the damage is being put on the stack, and you can cast Fatal Blow before the damage resolves, and if the creature leaves the battlefield, the normal strike damage never resolves.

Damage does not use the stack.

First strike (and the first part of double strike) is handled in the first combat damage step, and regular combat damage (and the second part of double strike) is handled in an additional combat damage step afterward.

Further, for things that do use the stack, objects on the stack exist independently of their sources. Removing the source does not remove the ability from the stack.
