Eldrazi Mimic vs removal interaction?

Asked by Fizzz 8 years ago

Hello,

During this weekend's PT, one of the casters mentioned an interaction that I still do not understand.

He mentioned that if you trigger Eldrazi Mimic's ability, while it is on the stack, you could Dismember the creature the mimic is trying to copy, for it to die along with the new casted creature.

Ex: You have the mimic on the field, then you cast a Thought-Knot Seer, with the mimic's ability on the stack, you cast Dismember on the seer, which would kill the mimic too somehow, as it is copying a -1/-1 creature?

Is this even possible?

I don't think Eldrazi Mimic would die. I think the ability would fizzle, as it would not have a valid target, since Thought-Knot Seer would be in the graveyard.

It would not fizzle because it does not target. It is not removed from the stack either. It resolves as normal.

1/22/2016 Use the new creatures power and toughness at the time the ability resolves to determine the base power and toughness of Eldrazi Mimic. If that creature is no longer on the battlefield at that time, use its power and toughness when it left the battlefield. (Keep in mind that those values may be negative, for example if a spell like Spatial Contortion giving it +3/-3 is what caused it to leave the battlefield.)

It is possible for Eldrazi Mimic to die as a state based action for having 0 toughness because it checks the P/T of the creature the moment it left the battlefield.

Also note that proceeding to copy the dead creature's P/T would be very dumb, to put it bluntly.

The triggered ability from Eldrazi Displacer is a may ability, so as it resolves, you can simply choose not to do anything.

603.5. Some triggered abilities effects are optional (they contain may, as in At the beginning of your upkeep, you may draw a card). These abilities go on the stack when they trigger, regardless of whether their controller intends to exercise the ability's option or not. The choice is made when the ability resolves. Likewise, triggered abilities that have an effect unless something is true or a player chooses to do something will go on the stack normally; the unless part of the ability is dealt with when the ability resolves.

So what I'm hearing is, while it is technically possible to two-for-one a Mimic with Dismember, it would have to be the result of a misplay for that to actually happen.
