Duel sided card question concerning Westvale Abbey  Flip

Asked by Bantha1342 6 years ago

I have a question concerning duel sided cards, specifically Westvale Abbey  Flip. If I transform Westvale Abbey  Flip into Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip and he is sent to my graveyard, if I return him from the graveyard, do I bring the card back as Westvale Abbey  Flip requiring me to pay the cost again to transform the card or can I bring him back as the creature Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip? Thanks for any direction....

It'll be Westvale Abbey  Flip.

A double-faced card has only the characteristics of its front face in any zone excerpt the battlefield. While on the battlefield, a DFC has the characteristics of the face that's currently up.

When Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip dies, it'll go to the graveyard as a creature and then immediately revert to a land.

Couple English nitpicks:
Duel is a face-off between two parties.
Dual means having two parts.

Cards like Westvale Abbey  Flip are double-faced cards.

Thanks Epochalyptik. I'm afraid spelling is not one of my stronger points. So then I also assume I would need a card that specifically targets land and not creatures to return the card from the graveyard?

Correct. Only Westvale Abbey  Flip exists in the graveyard; Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip does not.

Note, however, that if Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip dies, it leaves the battlefield as a creature. Therefore, you can pull off some recursion interactions with cards like Cauldron of Souls or Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. Things like undying and persist trigger when a creature dies, but they don't care if the card they return is still a creature while in the graveyard. They'll return the card with a counter of the appropriate kind; just note that they'll return Westvale Abbey  Flip and not Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip.
