Does Wild Slash's ferocious prevent blocks?

Asked by griffcake745 9 years ago

My friend keeps trying to use Wild Slash's ferocious ability, which means damage can't be prevented, to stop me from blocking. I feel like that is not the true ruling but I'm not sure.

Wild Slash says nothing about blocking whatsoever. If it was intended to be able to stop people from blocking, it would explicitly say so.

Blocking doesn't prevent damage. That's a biiig stretch on his part about how that card works. Cards do only what they say they do. Effects which explicitly use the word "prevent" to prevent damage can't prevent them this turn after the spell resolves.

This has no impact on blocking assignments.

In addition to effects that say "prevent" protection is also considered to prevent damage and as such Wild Slash's ferocious would allow damage to a protected object. Protection still prohibits blocking and targeting. So unless a creature with protection was assigned to block or an untargeted spell is doing damage it will not matter.

It allows you to cancel out certain cards like Fog, but it does not allow you to make creatures un-blockable.
