Does "whenever you x, creatures you control get x" last all round?

Asked by Aftertherevolution 7 years ago

I'm sure this is covered somewhere but having trouble getting the right search terms I guess.

In this specific case:

I have Soulblade Djinn on the battlefield

I play Rise from the Tides

My understanding is that Soulblade Djinn triggers and resolves before Rise from the Tides resolves ... But is the Soulblade Djinn effect something that lasts all round, or does it just affect the creatures on the battlefield as it resolves?

Ie, In this case, would any of the Zombie tokens get Soulblade Djinn's +1/+1 effect? (and any previous ones, say If I had cast another instant earlier this round like Mugging?)

I guess it's the difference of whether it's an effect that is present and applies until the end of turn, or an effect that is applied in that moment and the results it gives out last until the end of turn.

It'll only affect creatures that're already on the battlefield. Soulblade Djinn has a triggered ability that applies once and only once each time it's triggered. If it were to affect all of your creatures regardless of when they've come into play, then it would be worded as a static ability like Muraganda Petroglyphs or Honor of the Pure.

I believe this ruling accurately answers your question:

611.2c If a continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability modifies the characteristics or changes the controller of any objects, the set of objects it affects is determined when that continuous effect begins. After that point, the set wont change. (Note that this works differently than a continuous effect from a static ability.) A continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability that doesnt modify the characteristics or change the controller of any objects, modifies the rules of the game, so it can affect objects that werent affected when that continuous effect began. If a single continuous effect has parts that modify the characteristics or changes the controller of any objects and other parts that dont, the set of objects each part applies to is determined independently.

Because Soulblade Djinn's trigger creates a continuous effect that modifies characteristics of your creatures (specifically buffs their power and toughness by 1), it will only apply to creatures you control as the triggered ability resolves.

So this would mean that Akroan Phalanx's ability would only grant +1/+0 to creature's I control as it resolves?

ok. takes a moment to let the wording of the ruling sink in, but I think I get it. :)
