Does Scion of the Ur-Dragon turn into the searched dragon?

Asked by jotjot 9 years ago

I enchant myself with Wheel of Sun and Moon. I activate Scion's ability to turn him into a different dragon. Will Scion turn into the searched dragon even though the searched dragon won't go to the GY but to the bottom of my library instead? Please help, thanks!

From the rulings on Gatherer:

Removing the other Dragon card from your graveyard has no effect on Scion of the Ur-Dragon.

Scion'll still be a copy of whatever you picked out.

I'm not certain that's right erabel. Removing the dragon card from your graveyard after Scion has become a copy of it will certainly have no effect, but Wheel of Sun and Moon sets up a replacement effect that makes it so the searched out dragon never touches the graveyard, and Scion of the Ur-Dragon has an an intervening "if" clause that seems to care if you actually put a dragon card into your graveyard, so I don't think Scion will turn into anything at all.

erabel is correct:

117.12. Some spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities read, [Do something]. If [a player] [does or doesnt], [effect]. or [A player] may [do something]. If [that player] [does or doesnt], [effect]. The action [do something] is a cost, paid when the spell or ability resolves. The If [a player] [does or doesnt] clause checks whether the player chose to pay an optional cost or started to pay a mandatory cost, regardless of what events actually occurred.

(also only triggered abilities have intervening if clauses)

erabel is right and Gidgetimer found the correct relevant rule. You did perform the action that Scion's ability cares about, even though it got replaced with a different result. You're able to get the necessary information from the dragon card because Wheel of Sun and Moon reveals it as part of the replacement effect.

Well, I guess Gidgetimer's post is most correct. The card isn't being "removed" from the graveyard. It never went there.
