Does Portcullis track a creature even after it stops being a creature?

Asked by AcryiA 6 years ago

Portcullis is in play along with at least two other creatures to satisfy its limit. A player who is above 30 life resolves Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant. State based actions see the life total and flip it. Does Portcullis still exile the enchantment it becomes as it is the same permanent on the battlefield as it was when Portcullis triggered?

It still gets exiled. Portcullis' ability isn't written in a way that cares about whether the permanent is still a creature at the time the ability resolves, so it doesn't matter. Note that it will go back to the default un-flipped status when it moves to exile.

I agree. When Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant enters the battlefield, it would trigger the ability of Portcullis. Therefore, Portcullis and all other abilities on the stack that care about creatures entering the battlefield would have to resolve before Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant would "officially" be on the battlefield and able to trigger its ability.

@AwesomeKyurem5: Both abilities trigger. What order they get put onto the stack depends on whose turn it is and who controls what, but it doesn't really matter since the Rune-Tail/Essence/whatever will get exiled regardless because it's still the same object that triggered Portcullis.

sigh discussion for another day. Either way, our reasonings may differ slightly, but we still agree on the answer and that's good enough for me.
