Does Paying Life Count as Losing Life?
Asked by DemonDragonJ 8 years ago
Some cards have effects that trigger when a player loses life, and others have effects that require a player to pay life, so I wonder: does paying life count as losing life? For example, if a player paid 1 life to use the ability of Yawgmoth's Bargain, and their opponent controlled an Exquisite Blood, would the second player gain 1 life?
From what I understand, any time that a player's life total decreases, for any reason, that is considered life loss, so paying life should interact with effects that care about life loss. Is that the case?

To be clear, you lose life whenever you experience a negative change in life. It doesn't matter what caused that change.

Yes.
If you lose life in any way (Paying life, lose life spells, taking damage) your opponent's Exquisite Blood WILL trigger.
