Does Ixidron void the unearth ability?

Asked by SirFowler 7 years ago

Let's say I unearthed multiple creatures using Sedris, the Traitor King. Before the end step, I cast Ixidron, flipping all unearthed creatures. Will the unearthed creatures still exile at the end of turn? What if I return them to my hand? Will I still have to exile them? I know using flicker effects like Deadeye Navigator and Ghostly Flicker would get around permanently exiling the creature, but I wasn't sure about Ixidron.

No. When a permanent is turned face down (flipping refers to things like Nezumi Graverobber), it's still the same object, even though it's characteristics change. Because unearth creates a delayed triggered ability that exists independently of the object at all times as opposed to conveying a text ability to the affected permanent, the EOT exile ability will still trigger and apply.

Exile is the only way to cheat unearth because unearth's replacement effect applies if the creature would go anywhere except exile.
