Does Engulfing Slagwurm's ability work before or durning combat?

I have Engulfing Slagwurm on the field and block a creature that has deathtouch. Does my worm destroy it before they do damage to each other, during damage, or after damage? Does Engulfing Slagwurm survive after blocking a creature that has deathtouch?

Engulfing Slagwurm 's ability triggers when a creature is declared to block it, or you block with it. This happens before damage is dealt.
