does End Hostilities work like this?

Asked by capriom85 9 years ago

My commander playgroup was playing last night. I was using my Rafiq deck and I had him loaded with a few chants and a sword. One of the chants gave him indestructible. One of my opponent's casts End Hostilities. Instantly the board starts erupting in arguments about what happens to my blinged out Rafiq. One player says nothing because of the wording on End Hostilities. He says only the permanents on destroyed creatures go away and Rafiq wouldn't be destroyed. Another player claimed that only the stuff on Rafiq would go to my graveyard. And finally a third player believed it all went including Rafiq because as he loses indestructible he would be destroyed claiming some strange stack interaction.

I am pretty sure the third kid is wrong but the other two make good points. For the sake of our game I pointed out that I was the only player with cards in hand and unless someone top decked removal of a counter Rafiq was coming back next turn to finish the game anyway, but what is the correct interaction here?

All creatures and permanents attached to creatures are destroyed.

If a given object is indestructible, the destroy effect won't destroy it, but it is still effected by the spell. You'll end up with a Rafiq with nothing on him. He isn't destroyed because the effect which would destroy him is applied to him at the same time as it's applied to the thing giving him indestructible, and the effect simply happens, it doesn't hang around like damage would.

When the object giving him indestructible goes away he's no longer indestructible, but the destroy effect of End Hostilities doesn't persist on objects past the resolution of the spell, it just happens.
