Does Blood Funnel counter creatures made by March of the Machines

Asked by UniqueUserID 5 years ago

If both Blood Funnel and March of the Machines are on the battlefield, are non-creature artifacts I summon such as Ichor Wellspring considered creature spells and countered?

I just realized this question makes no sense. Since I can't close this until answered, here is my new question.

Does this interaction work?

I have Blood Funnel, March of the Machines and Pia's Revolution on my side of the battlefield.

I can now cast spells such as Ichor Wellspring for 0. But by casting it I must sacrifice an animated artifact on the battlefield now, such as a Mycosynth Wellspring. Asuming no one pays Pia's Revolutions cost, I can now endlessly loop these 2 wellsprings forever?

And if I ever have no creatures to sacrifice, no ETB triggers can happen, since they are countered and never enter the battlefield.

First interaction:

Yes, this would work--at least in theory.

Let's look at the stack:

  1. You cast Ichor Wellspring, this would trigger Blood Funnel's counter ability, except you sacrifice your Mycosynth Wellspring to nullify the ability.

  2. Mycosynth Wellspring's death puts two new abilities on the stack: Pia's Revolution's recursion ability and Mycosynth Wellspring's tutor ability. Both of these will resolve, so it does not really matter what order you place them on the stack.

  3. The abilities from #2 resolve. If your opponent does not take the 3 damage, you will be allowed to return Mycosynth Wellspring to your hand.

  4. Ichor Wellspring resolves and enters the battlefield. It is now a creature due to March of the Machines.

  5. You can repeat steps 1-4 infinitely (alternating which Wellspring is sacrificed).

Would it work in reality? Almost certainty not. Three damage to stop an infinite combo is inconsequential--there's no way an opponent will let you pull this off. If you've already gotten them to 3 or less life, then you probably have better ways to win, and do not need to mess around with somewhat complicated combos.

For your second question, that is correct. If countered, they never enter the battlefield, and cannot cause ETB triggers.

To the original question - no. March affects artifacts on the battlefield only. On the stack, for Blood Funnel purposes, Ichor Wellspring is a non-creature artifact. If you sac a creature, it will resolve and be a 2/2 artifact creature due to March.

For the second one - yes, if no-one choose to stop it, it would be a loop.
For the final one - yes, that is how it would work.
