Does an Enchantment Aura count as a spell targeting a creature?

Asked by LordVonChimp 4 years ago

I'm wondering if Enchantment Auras count, in context I'm looking for useful triggers for Gargos, Vicious Watcher . And although the text of Auras don't actually say 'target', it is what they do.

so wondering if anyone can definitively confirm, and maybe even point me in the direction of the releveant rule please?

THanks!

303.4a An Aura spell requires a target, which is defined by its enchant ability.

The act of casting an Aura spell requires a target. This is the only time that an Aura targets, but that's enough for Gargos since it would be a creature you control becoming the target of a spell.

As a note, if you somehow put an Aura onto the battlefield some way other than casting it as a spell, such as returning it to the battlefield directly from the graveyard, it does not target. It must enchant something legal (so you can't put an "enchant land" Aura onto a non-land), but since it doesn't target it gets around things like shroud. This also means it doesn't trigger Gargos.
