Does an ability on a creature resolve before a shock?

Asked by arkaljar 9 years ago

HI there

If I pay the mana cost and tap Jalira, Master Polymorphist , sacrifice a creature to pay the cost, then someone casts Shock on Jalira, does the ability still resolve, or does the shock resolve before the ability? Jalira was tapped during my first main phase. And I would the dynamics change if it was tapped during another phase of play?

Thanks very much.

You activate Jalira, Master Polymorphist 's ability, it goes on the stack, while it's on the stack, your opponent casts Shock .

Shock resolves first, killing Jalira, Master Polymorphist , then jalira's ability resolves, you reveal until you find a non-legendary creature, and put it on the field.

Once an ability is on the stack, removing the source will not counter it, unless the opponent casts cards specifically to counter abilities like Stifle or Not of This World

Scratch that, Not of This World counters only if it targets a permanent you control.

For a short answer: Yes, the shock resolves first, but Jalira's ability still resolves anyway and works as normal. The phase of the turn does not matter.
