Does a (token) copy of a ninja dealing combat damage also deal combat damage?

Asked by SleepySmiley 6 years ago

I have Flameshadow Conjuring in play. I attack with Slither Blade, which isn't blocked, then ninjutsu in a Mistblade Shinobi. I then activate Flameshadow Conjuring's 1 red mana ability, to copy the ninja. The question is, does the copy deal combat damage as well?

No.

The structure of combat is as follows:

Beginning of combat
Declare attackers
Declare blockers
First strike damage -> Normal Combat damage
End of Combat

In order for the copy to attack and deal damage, you must activate Flameshadow Conjuring during the beginning of combat phase at the latest. You can only ninjutsu in a creature during the declare blockers step.

To clarify, the reason the token doesn't get to damage is because it isn't attacking. Mistblade Shinobi clearly states you put it into play tapped and attacking. Flameshadow Conjuring just puts a token with haste into play. While it is a copy of the Shinobi, it doesn't copy the fact that he was already attacking (nor would it copy the fact that he's tapped, enchanted etc.)

Since you already had to attack with the Slither Blade in order to ninjutsu the Shinobi in, it's too late to declare an attack with your new, non-attacking token.
