Do upkeep abilities "stack"?

Asked by vic 3 years ago

I believe I can do this, but I want to confirm. Yes or No is all I need.

I have a Concerted Effort and Kithkin Zephyrnaut in play as well as other creatures, but none with flying or vigilance. Can I give them all flying and vigilance at the beginning of my upkeep?

Yes that works.

Both of those are triggered abilities (they begin with one of the words "when", "whenever", or "at"). If multiple triggered abilities controlled by the same player are trying to go onto the stack at the same time, that player decides what order to put them onto the stack.

I don't know if this was also part of your question: Though Concerted Effort looks like it might have an "intervening 'if' clause" that will check whether creatures have any of the abilities before it starts to trigger, it doesn't. An intervening "if" condition is always written as “When/Whenever/At [trigger event], if [condition], [effect].” Concerted Effort 's ability isn't formatted in that specific way.

Rhadamanthus That's what I'm wondering. Say I choose to trigger Concerted Effort before Kithkin Zephyrnaut at upkeep. Does the entire text of CE get played out and completed before we even take a look at KZ? Or does the "if" mean we go through every upkeep trigger first and then see what abilities I get from CE?

Rhadamanthus Disregard my other response. Your first comment hadn't appeared on my screen yet, but your second one had. Weird.

vic remember that the stack works backwards - the most recent happens first, the oldest happens last.

So if you trigger one card before another, the other card will resolve first.

(In this case though, they'll both trigger at the same time, and then you can order them on the stack in the way you prefer. So if you put CE on the bottom, and KZ on top, then KZ will resolve fully, and then CE will do its thing. If you ordered them the other way though, they'd play out in the other order)

vic: Answers to your question have been up for a while. Since there don't seem to be any further follow-ups or corrections to be made, I marked one as the "Accepted answer" so this topic can move out of the list of unanswered questions.
