Do tapped permenants that phase out return to play tapped?

Asked by Apoptosis 8 years ago

Been looking into rules on phasing to see whether tapped permenants that phase out come back into play tapped or not. What I've been able to find is that the permenant comes back into play at the untap step before untapping occurs and that all auras/counters also phase in/out with the permenant at the time phasing occurs.

But I can find anywhere it specifically says that tapped permenants that phase out come back into play tapped.

I realize that inder most circumstances this wouldn't matter as they come back in at the beginning of the untap phase, but I'm designing a soft lock deck that uses cards like Smoke to prevent untapping & wondering about the interaction with Equipoise.

Yes it will phase in tapped. Here are the comp rules for "statuses" (Stati? Stats?):

  • 110.6. A permanents status is its physical state. There are four status categories, each of which has two possible values: tapped/untapped, flipped/unflipped, face up/face down, and phased in/phased out. Each permanent always has one of these values for each of these categories.

  • 110.6c A permanent retains its status until a spell, ability, or turn-based action changes it, even if that status is not relevant to it.

It should be noted that phased out permanents don't "return to play" in the sense that they reenter the battlefield. They're always "in play." They're just treated as though they don't exist. Phasing doesn't alter them in any other way, unlike something like blinking, which will cause the object to leave the battlefield and then reenter in its default state.

Thanks Epochalyptik, phasing is a weird mechanic: permanent doesn't technically leave the battlefield (so no enter/exit triggers), but can't be destroyed with board wipes (etc), they retain counters, auras, equipment, tapped status, but I thought I read that tokens don't come back. I would assume that phased out permanents would avoid end of turn triggers, etc.
