Do attack triggered abilities trigger before aetherize returns creatures to hand?

Asked by lilfoxgod 9 years ago

So I will just explain my situation to make things easy.

I had 1 Scourge of Valkas, 1 Utvara Hellkite, and 2 6/6 flying dragon tokens on my field, which he AEtherized

What I tried to do was kill him with direct damage from Scourge of Valkas ability when my 4 6/6 dragon tokens entered the field on the assumption that they enter before his AEtherize takes effect.

Does it work like that, and if not what happens?

Thanks in advance. :3

For AEtherize to work, creatures need to be attacking. This means that Utvara Hellkite's ability would have triggered.

There are 2 things that can happen here:

  • 1) AEtherize is cast in respose to triggers on Utvara Hellkite. What happens here is that all the attacking creatures would bounce back to their owners hand, then Utvara Hellkite's ability would resolve, landing the 6/6 flying dragons onto the battlefield.

  • 2) AEtherize cast after Utvara Hellkite's ability resolves. Here, Scourge of Valkas' ability will have a chance to trigger because it is still on the battlefield at the time that the dragon tokens enter. Even if AEtherize bounces it in responce to its triggers, it will still deal damage, because the ability exists independently of the source.

So you declare attackers, and Utvara Hellkite's ability triggers four times (assuming you attack with all four of your original Dragons).

If your opponent responds to these abilities with AEtherize, then your four attackers will be returned to your hand, then you will get your tokens when the four instances of Utvara Hellkite's ability resolve afterward. Because Scourge of Valkas isn't on the battlefield when those tokens enter, its ability won't trigger.

@TheHroth: Note that Utvara Hellkite's ability will trigger once per attacker, and each instance will produce one token. Therefore, there are many times at which the opponent could interrupt the abilities. Each time one instance of Utvara Hellkite's ability resolves, Scourge of Valkas's ability will trigger and be put on top of the stack above the other instances of Utvara Hellkite's ability.

Note also that Scourge of Valkas's ability counts the number of Dragons you control when the ability itself resolves, so if your opponent casts AEtherize in response to Scourge of Valkas's ability, the ability will only count the number of Dragons remaining after the spell resolves.

Ok that makes sense when you put it like that.

Thank you helping me understand the rules more :3
