Do activated abilities work for multiple instances of cards?

Asked by Ledzeppoli 8 years ago

For example: I have Avarax out and I activate its ability that grants Avarax +1/+0 until the end of turn. If I have two Avarax on the battlefield, do both get +1/+0 until the end of turn?

Similarly, I have a Obstinate Baloth enter the battlefield and I gain 4 life. Then I have another Obstinate Baloth enter the battlefield, do I gain 8 life?

If a card mentions its name in its text, it means "this object right here", not all cards with the same name. When cards want it to matter that they have the same name explicitly, it will be worded along the lines of Undead Servant or Squadron Hawk.

"When Avarax comes into play" is simply the more flavorful version of "When this card/permanent enters the battlefield".

No.

When an object refers to itself by name, it means "this object." If the effect is meant to apply to all objects with that name, the text will instead read "[objects] named ~."

Only the Avarax whose ability you activated will get a buff, and only the ability of the Obstinate Baloth that enters the field will trigger.

Accepted #2 because it directly addressed the ability question. Though both answers were helpful. Thanks!
