disdainful stroke and X

Asked by dragonchild2994 9 years ago

Disdainful Stroke cast to cancel any card with X such as Genesis Hydra does it work or is X considered 0 or is that only when not being cast?

also if i counter Genesis Hydra does my opponent still get to reveal X cards to get a bonus permanent?

The converted mana cost of a card on the stack is always the values of X plus the non changable values. So Genesis Hydra for x=5 would have a CMC of 7. So X would have to be at least 2 to be able to counter it.

To answer your second question, the reveal trigger for Genesis Hydra triggers on casting so even if Genesis Hydra is countered they will still get the permanent.

in the mana costs of cards is always treated as 0 in all zones except the stack. While on the stack, a spell's CMC will include the value chosen for X while casting that spell.

For example, if you cast Genesis Hydra and choose X=5, then the CMC of Genesis Hydra while Genesis Hydra is on the stack will be 7.

Genesis Hydra 's first ability triggers when Genesis Hydra is cast. Countering Genesis Hydra will not counter the ability, nor will it interfere with the ability in any way.

But in the case of having something like a stifle, trickbind, or voidslime. You could counter the ability on the stack. So it's like this, you cast genesis hydra for xGG, X is 5 in this case. So his cmc is 7 on the stack, now his "triggered" ability takes priority and has to be placed on the stack(if multiple abilities are being placed on the stack, the "turn player" will get priority and puts their triggered or activated abilities on the stack first. As well as choosing the order the abilities go on the stack.) So you place your genesis hydra trigger on the stack, you then have to pass priority to your opponent before you can resolve the triggered ability. So you pass priority to the opponent, your opponent then casts stifle and targets your genesis hydras triggered ability. Stifle goes on the stack and priority is passed to the turn player, in this case were gonna say you don't have anything you want to add to the stack, priority is passed back to the opponent. Opponent let's the stifle resolve, your triggered ability is now countered. With Genesis hydra is still on, you gain priority again. You have nothing you want to add to the stack again you just want to resolve your hydra, pass priority back to the opponent. Opponent gains priority. Opponent now cast disdainful stroke targeting your genesis hydra. You gain priority again, pass priority back to the opponent. Opponent let's stroke resolve hydra is now countered. As well he could have just cast disdainful stroke into genesis hydra, and then cast stifle into the triggered ability. On the stack you have to resolve spells and abilities one at a time and it's gotta be ran by both players in almost every case. Anyways haha let that soak in. Good luck have fun!

Reviving a year-old topic to introduce an unasked-about corner case is rarely useful.
