Destroying Attacking Creature

A friend and I were having a disscussion on Divine Verdict. He attacked me, I used Divine Verdict and I thought that was it, but he said the damage is still being given to me, but I said that I destroyed the creature, so no damage could even be dealt to me. Help??

If you destroy the creature before combat damage step, you won't be dealt damage in the combat damage step.
