Deflecting Palm question

Asked by Bovine073 7 years ago

Here's the situation.

I'm at 9 life, and attack with a Silhana Ledgewalker with a Daybreak Coronet and Ethereal Armor on him. He is a 9/9.

I also attack with a Slippery Bogle with a Rancor, Hyena Umbra, and Daybreak Coronet attatched to him. He is a 7/5.

My opponent Deflecting Palms my 9/9 guy during the declare blockers step (no one is blocking him).

So I notice Deflecting Palm has an if clause, does this make the damage be dealt after combat damage? Or do I take 9 damage at the same time I would be getting my 7 lifelink points. (NOTE: both creatures have lifelink and first strike).

Additionally, If I had a Spirit Link on my Slippery Bogle, when would I get the life from that (he still has first strike).

And one more, let's say my Slippery Bogle was still a 7/5 with lifelink, but he did not have first strike? Then what would happen?

Deflecting Palm is a prevention and replacement effect. Instead of Silhana Ledgewalker doing 9 damage to your opponent, that damage is prevented and Deflecting Palm does 9 damage to you. Because it is replacing combat damage it happens when the combat damage would happen, at the same time as all other combat damage. Lifelink also gains you life simultaneously with the damage being dealt. So you would take nine and gain seven at the same time resulting in a net loss of two.

If the Slippery Bogle had Spirit Link on him then the ability would trigger and go on the stack after combat damage was dealt (as long as your opponent was still alive). You still have more than 0 life so you were not eliminated from the game.

If the Slippery Bogle didn't have first strike, then you would take the nine from Deflecting Palm. Go to 0. SBA would be checked before a player receives priority on the first strike combat damage step. And you would lose the game for having 0 or less life.

Thanks Gidgetimer!

Confused about the 2nd paragraph.

"If the Slippery Bogle had Spirit Link on him then the ability would trigger and go on the stack after combat damage was dealt (as long as your opponent was still alive). You still have more than 0 life so you were not eliminated from the game."

If the Spirit Link resolves after the palm, I thought I would be at 0 life?

Damage happens simultaneously, so you will gain life from your other creature at the same time deflecting palm is dealing damage to you, resulting in a net life loss of 2.

Additionally, If I had a Spirit Link on my Slippery Bogle, when would I get the life from that (he still has first strike)?

Yes, Armadillo Cloak and Spirit Link do not grant lifelink to a creature. The ability triggers after combat damage is dealt; lifelink modifies the damage itself.

And one more, let's say my Slippery Bogle was still a 7/5 with lifelink, but he did not have first strike? Then what would happen?

You would lose 9 life in the first strike damage phase due to the redirection for Deflecting palm. Then, in the normal combat damaage phase, the Boggle would deal its damage gaining you 7 life.

Oh, sorry. I read that as "Spirit Link in addition to something granting lifelink" if it was instead then you die before getting the life.
