Deafening Clarion + Firesong and Sunspeaker (and similiar multi enemy/target effects)

Asked by Brimstone 5 years ago

Hello everyone! I made a Firesong and Sunspeaker edh deck and it's a blast, but sometimes I struggle to fully understand the interaction between this creature and some of my spells.

I understand that you can double up to some extent on lifesteal/effects that gain life, such as Lightning Helix however I get a little more confused when it comes to spells that effect multiple creatures/opponents, but don't have multiple targets. The most confusing of which for me (atm) is Deafening Clarion.

Can someone please explain how exactly this ability would interact if I had Firesong and Sunspeaker in play and I cast Deafening Clarion while my opponents had 5 enemy creatuers in play? (or something similar?)

Also if someone could explain to me when hitting multiple enemies causes more than one trigger of Firesong and Sunspeaker's zap ability, and when it does not trigger it, I would be very greatful!

Thx!

Lifelink means that all damage dealt by a source causes you to gain that much life. Assuming FS&SS were your only creature Deafening Clarion would deal 18 damage and you would therefore gain 18 life. All the damage is dealt as a single event, so you get 1 instance of lifegain from a white instant or sorcery, and get to Lightning Bolt once.

For the second question I assume you are asking when a singe Red/White spell will cause multiple FS&SS triggers via dealing damage and lifelink. There are currently no single cards that would give you multiple triggers, but I will use mono red examples so that you can see the difference in wording in case Painter's Servant ever gets unbanned or your playgroup plays fast and loose with the ban list. Pyroclasm does all of its damage as a single event and would therefore give you one instance of lifegain and 1 trigger. Chandra's Fury deals damage as two events and would therefore be two instances of lifegain and two triggers. Cone of Flame deals damage as three different events and would be three instances of lifegain and three triggers.

Red/White spells such as Lightning Helix , Warleader's Helix , and Brightflame WILL trigger FS/SS twice. Gaining life from lifelink damage is one lifegain event, triggering FS/SS. Gaining life from the instructions on the spell is a second lifegain event. FS/SS triggers twice.
Gatherer confirms this.

You are correct, I am sorry that it wasn't apparent that the "via damage and lifelink" qualifier from the first sentence in my second paragraph was still in effect for the second sentence.
