Damage triggers of creatures killed in combat?

Asked by alexthegreat38 9 years ago

Hi guys,

Say I attack my opponent with Shaman of the Great Hunt and Savage Knuckleblade, and they block my Shaman of the Great Hunt with, say, Courser of Kruphix, but leave my Savage Knuckleblade unblocked.

Will my Savage Knuckleblade still get the +1/+1 counter from Shaman of the Great Hunt's damage trigger? Why or why not?

Thanks.

I do believe yes because combat damage is dealt all at once so eventhough the shaman has damage on it while the knuckleblade deals damage its still alive to give the counter until the "clean up" at the end of combat when the shaman dies and must leave the field

I'm pretty sure you're right, I'd just like to hear what some other people have to say as well.

EmblemMn is correct.

Combat damage is all done at once and all triggered abilities from it like the one of Shaman of the Great Hunt are put on the stack after that. Abilities on the stack resolve independently of their source, so you will get the 1/1 counter on Knuckleblade.

All combat damage is dealt simultaneously (unless there's first/double strike involved, which doesn't apply in this situation). In your example Shaman of the Great Hunt is still on the battlefield when damage is dealt, so it triggers for Savage Knuckleblade. Though Shaman is destroyed for lethal damage immediately afterwards, it doesn't change the fact that the trigger happened, and the ability will add a +1/+1 counter to the Knuckleblade as it resolves.
