Cyclops Gladiator Vs Baneslayer Angel

Asked by darkabolisher 9 years ago

I attack with Cyclops Gladiator and choose my opponent's Baneslayer Angel as a target for it's ability, before the declare blockers phase. How is damage assigned??

The Cyclops Gladiator will deal 4 damage to the Baneslayer Angel. Baneslayer Angel will deal 5 damage to the Cyclops, which will gain the controller of the angel 5 life from lifelink, and your Cyclops will die. They will not need to declare any blockers, as you no longer have any attacking creatures alive during the declare blockers step.

You have a dead Cyclops, and they have an alive Baneslayer with 4 damage marked on it.

So, in this case, it doesn't matter at all if Baneslayer Angel has first strike or not! That's what I needed to know! Thanks a lot!!

First Strike only modifies Combat Damage. The same is true of a number of damage-related abilities. Things like First-strike, Double-strike, and Trample only apply to actual combat damage dealt in combat. Things like Deathtouch, Lifelink, Wither and Infect modify how all their damage is dealt no matter when or how it is dealt, and so they apply to the "fight" mechanic that the Cyclops has.
