Courser of Kruphix with Scry Land - Flip then scry or scry then flip?

Asked by keyno 9 years ago

Okay, so for example, I play Courser of Kruphix and reveal that the top card of my deck is a Temple of Mystery . I play the Temple with the Courser's effect and immediately scry thanks to the Temple. Let's say I bottom that card - did my opponent ever have an opportunity to see the card? Ie, do you flip then scry, or scry then flip?

The scry from Temple of Mystery is part of a triggered ability. It only happens when the ability resolves. The top card of your library will be revealed from the moment you play Temple of Mystery , so your opponent will definitely know what the next card is before you get to scry it away. If you do scry it away, you'll have to reveal the new top card.

Courser of Kruphix 's first ability is a static ability and so it applies at all times. Even if the top card of your library changes in the middle of a spell resolving it must be revealed before anything else happens including the continued resolution of the spell.

I know this was a lot of words to explain a simple concept and goes a little beyond the scope of this question, but the specific case I am thinking of is a multiple draw spell or ability the simplest of which would be Divination . Since you are playing with the top card of your library revealed you must reveal each card before you draw it.

Brilliant, I expected that was the case, but thought I should double check - I get a tad muddled with the fiddly effects like that =P

Oh right? So say I used Life's Legacy on a Phytotitan with the Courser on the field, they'd see each card as I draw it?

Yes, because they are revealed as they become the top card. The ability just applies. As another aside because someone was asking "how long do I have to reveal a revealed card for" the other day, while you can just show each card for a fraction of a second and have "reveled" it, but I find it more conducive to play to just lay the cards on the table as I peel them off the top and then pick them up in the order I laid them down, this way it takes no more time than showing for the fraction of a second but it allows the opponent to actually see what the cards were so that they don't have to ask if they are taking notes or memorizing them (both perfectly legal things to do to a reveled card BTW)

Well that's good to know - I didn't know if cards drawn in a chunk were sort of "picked up in a block" or something, but i'll keep it in mind to show off my gleaming new hand in future ;)Haha, thanks =)

Draw effects cause you to draw 1 at a time, which is weird because nothing else ever counts "Do X things" as X events of "do a thing" instead of 1 event of "doing X things". This comes up in a surprising amount of scenarios. Nekusar, the Mindrazer triggers off of each card drawn as does Consecrated Sphinx and anything else that triggers on card draw.

Okay, that's useful to know, and now i'm a little curious about Scry. Let's say I played Augury Owl with the Courser, would that be the same, as in picking up each card one after the other to look at, or and revealing them one at a time, or would I pick up the block together then?

  • I must admit, I love MTG for the sheer volume of rules & effects that collide with odd outcomes, that always have a solid and definite answer.

We are getting into technicalities here so this is going to require you to think about where things are considered to be instead of where they physically are. Scry allows you to look at the top X cards of your library. You can then put each card on the top or bottom in any order (the cards all move at the same time, ordering refers to in top-bottom, not chronologically). The cards never leave your library, so the card that was originally on the top is the top card of your library until after the cards move. At this time the new top card (which may be the same as the old top card) is revealed.

Cool, so when scrying the cards are still in your library, you're just looking at them. Good to know =)
