Copying a creature

Asked by BlueScope 9 years ago

Gatherer says: Clone copies exactly what was printed on the original creature and nothing more (unless that creature is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn't copy whether that creature is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on.

I'm wondering that if it doesn't copy non-copy effects, what are effects it would actually copy, however aren't printed on the card it's copying. Basically, what could possibly be copied in addition to the printed text?

A link to a related paragraph in the Comprehensive Rules would be very apprechiated as well. I can't find any explanation of that anywhere, and reference at hand when it comes down to it is always good...

Thanks in advance!

Copy effects are effects exactly like Clone 's. They're effects that define the new text of an object.

Clone has a vanilla copy effect; it copies exactly the text of the original object. Some copy effects, such as those of Phyrexian Metamorph , Phantasmal Image , and Progenitor Mimic , define additional text or characteristics to be added to the copy.

When you copy an object that is itself a copy of something else, you copy the text of that object including any text added by the first copy effect.

For example, Clone copying Phyrexian Metamorph copying Arbor Elf would produce an Arbor Elf that is also an artifact in addition to its other types.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense... thanks a lot, that has confused me for a long time now... and probably shouldn't have :)
