Control of Companion

Asked by musej 3 years ago

Recently I was in a Commander game where my opponent had the Companion (Lurrus of the Dream Den). I cast an (Act of Aggression) on (Lurrus of the Dream Den). My deck did not comply with Lurrus's 3 or less converted mana cost ability. What then happens? Is (Lurrus of the Dream Den) put into exile? Does he go to the graveyard? Does he go to the sideboard?

I cast the (Act of Aggression) more as a removal function to get rid of (Lurrus of the Dream Den), but am unsure as to what happens.

A player's deck needs to fulfill the companion restriction to be able to start the game with it in the companion zone. Once it is put into its owner's hand from there, it's a normal card. So if you target it with Act of Aggression , the spell resolves as it would when targeting any other creature.

Double square brackets around the card's name is what creates the link: Lurrus of the Dream-Den , Act of Aggression

You get the normal effect of Act of Aggression, and nothing unusual happens otherwise. The deckbuilding restriction part of the Companion ability only affects whether or not you're allowed to start the game with that card as the Companion for your deck. It doesn't do anything after the game has started.

It's worth noting that if you use Lurrus of the Dream-Den as your commander, the deck building restriction does not apply. It's only to start the game with it as your companion so you can pay to add it to your hand from outside the game.
